In the same study, the authors document a measurable decline in the crocodile population in the Olifants River Gorge at Kruger National Park — one of the rare cases where the species' keystone role and its own decline are documented together, within the same system.

At least 216 crocodiles died of pansteatitis (an inflammation of body fat) during this period, at the same time that a catfish species from the same river developed the same disease and a markedly more piscivorous diet than before — two parallel effects of the same river degradation, not one causing the other.

The pansteatitis outbreak in crocodiles and sharptooth catfish coincides with the rising waters of the Massingir Dam, which transformed a stretch of the river from a rocky and sandy substrate into a clay-substrate zone typical of a lake. The authors interpret crocodile mortality as a visible symptom of broader system degradation, affecting several species in parallel rather than a single isolated link in the food chain.

No study on this particular system isolates the contribution of crocodile predation, as such, to catfish regulation — the documented link is a shared river degradation, not a confirmed predator-prey cascade effect.
