What a prairie dog colony would become in the total absence of its specialist predator has never been directly measured — the ferret's near-extinction preceded any such study, and its current population, barely 400 wild individuals scattered across dozens of isolated sites, is too sparse to exert a measurable effect at the colony scale.

What the literature documents abundantly is the reverse relationship: more than 90% of the ferret's diet consists of prairie dogs, on which it also depends for shelter (it lives in their burrows). This strict dependence is in fact why the ferret itself nearly went extinct in the 20th century, when ranchers' mass poisoning of prairie dog colonies collapsed its sole food source — to the point that a surviving population was not rediscovered until 1981, near Meeteetse, Wyoming, after the species had been presumed extinct. But knowing what the ferret needs says nothing about what its own presence or absence changes in the prairie dog.

The closest available test remains indirect: ferret reintroductions fail almost systematically on prairie dog colonies that are too small, which confirms its strict dependence rather than the reverse effect this entry is looking for. Where a reintroduction succeeds and persists over several years, one can at least conclude that the ferret's return did not collapse the colony that supports it.

Sylvatic plague, an introduced disease that directly affects both species, complicates interpretation: a reintroduction site can fail either because the colony was too small from the start or because plague struck in the meantime — the two causes are not always easy to distinguish after the fact, and neither measures what the ferret contributes to the colony that supports it.

What's missing to confirm it: Isolating the effect of prairie dog colony size alone on reintroduction success, independent of sylvatic plague, would still need to be done systematically site by site — without thereby answering the question of the ferret's effect on the colony itself.
