By excluding nectar-feeding birds — but not insects — from 20 x 20 m cages set up at six fynbos sites, common pagoda seed production collapsed entirely in their absence, while other proteas in the same family maintained seed production thanks to insect pollinators.

This contrast between species in the same family — total collapse in the common pagoda, partial compensation in some proteas — shows that a single ecosystem can hold both species fully dependent on bird pollinators and others able to do without them, a level of nuance that only a full-scale removal experiment, rather than simple field observation, can reveal.

In most fynbos pagodas, a fire occurring too soon after the previous one can locally wipe out the species if seeds haven't had time to accumulate in the soil. The ability to resprout directly from the rootstock makes the common pagoda the most widespread and resilient of the genus's 13 species, precisely because it doesn't depend solely on this seed-fire cycle.
