Hunted to total disappearance in the wild by 1972, the Arabian oryx was rebuilt from a founding herd of just nine animals assembled starting in 1963, reintroduced into the desert from 1982 onward — becoming, in June 2011, the first animal the IUCN ever reclassified from 'extinct in the wild' down to a lesser threat category.

The founding herd, assembled at Phoenix Zoo under the name 'World Herd,' formed the basis of an internationally coordinated captive-breeding program spanning several decades before any return to the desert. By 2016, the wild population exceeded 1,200 individuals, supplemented by 6,000 to 7,000 additional individuals in captivity in zoos and reserves worldwide.

Genetic analysis

Despite this spectacular demographic recovery, genetic diversity remains fragile and highly uneven across populations: the United Arab Emirates population shows an effective population size of just 2.1 individuals and more than 75% inbred individuals, compared with 44.3 and about 25% for the Omani population.

The Al-Wusta Wildlife Reserve in Oman alone conserves 58% of the species' known global mitochondrial genetic diversity — a reminder that individual count alone doesn't measure the real health of a population rebuilt from such a narrow bottleneck. The authors recommend shifting from random mating to management grounded in individual tracking of genetic ancestry.

As a large desert herbivore, the Arabian oryx could play a role in shaping vegetation structure or dispersing seeds across its habitat — but no study measures this effect; available research covers its demographic and genetic recovery, not its ecological role in the desert.
