The pearl mussel is described as a key "ecosystem engineer" because its filtering activity alone moves nutrients from the water column to the streambed — a service documented in freshwater mussels generally and specifically measured in this species.
Without a pearl mussel bed, young brown trout would behave differently depending on flow — a measured effect of the mussel's presence on its host fish. The relationship also runs the other way, just as strictly: the mussel's larvae, the glochidia, must attach to the gills of Atlantic salmon or brown trout to complete their development, so without a healthy salmonid population in the river, the mussel itself simply cannot reproduce.

This double dependency — the mussel needs the fish to reproduce, and its presence in turn alters the fish's behavior — makes the mussel-salmonid relationship a two-way link rather than a simple service rendered by one to the other.
A complete disappearance of the pearl mussel from a watershed would reduce water filtration and nutrient transfer to the streambed — a plausible effect based on the two documented mechanisms, but one no study has measured as a whole.
