Axolotl density collapsed by more than 99% in sixteen years within its one natural habitat — from 6,000 individuals per km² in 1998 to fewer than 35 in 2014 — under the combined pressure of pollution, habitat loss, and two introduced fish, carp and tilapia, which prey on eggs and juveniles.

The authors compile successive censuses conducted across the Xochimilco canal network, the species' only known wild habitat. The axolotl remains, at the same time, one of the most studied laboratory model organisms in the world for its regenerative ability — a stark contrast between its abundance in captivity and its near-disappearance in the wild.

A program of refuges built into chinampas — traditional floating agricultural plots — has, over fifteen years, rehabilitated 40 chinampas and built 36 refuges and 71 biofilters that exclude exotic fish and improve water quality.

The program combines ecological restoration with traditional agriculture: 12 hectares replanted, 228 direct beneficiaries (chinampero families), and 912 indirect ones. The team aims for about 400 rehabilitated chinampas within fifteen years — a target that, even if reached, would still fall well short of the historic scale of the Xochimilco system.
